Pattern sizes do not a healthy body image make

Yesterday i got my simplicity pattern in the mail. Yey! Finally i would be able to start my fashion making hobby and get to use this great vintage fabric i bought at least three years ago at TFA on Grand. Back in college i was ok at making quilts and various messes out of thread and hand died fabric. When i transfered to Wash U I dropped all sewing classes to concentrate on design. Plus all they had was fashion design. I had a few women's lit classes with some of these fashion design majors. My jealously, envy, admiration for them was a bit embarrassing, coupled with the success of Project Runway and little becky's dream of making clothes when she grows up this was one of those things i talk a big talk about doing.

So finally i get this damn pattern in mail, (simplicity.com has free shipping, and their online store is discounted) Its hard to describe how overwhelming unpackaging a dress pattern is, the pieces are large and the folding system is more confusing than a road map. So what size am I? Where is the tape measure, I can't find it, so i pull my hair in a bracket grab a hoody cuz it won't stop raining and drive over to walgreens, pay double for a tape measure and some extra pins, and head back home.

Now i'm ready to roll. Ok Bust... 40. Shit that puts me at an 18. Waist? 35, that's a 20, I'm an f'ing cow! Go on... High bust 35, hips 41, which on the chart is a 16.
Now i realize that the first thing they tell you in the directions is to throw out all notions of sizes, but seriously this is just cruel. Especially since the pattern i got in mail only goes up to size 12. So from a 14 to a 20. How the hell do i size that? Now i realize i'm going to have to dart the bust line. I don't know how to dart. There's got to be some online sized chart figure-outer right? I'll keep you posted. . .

So ten minutes later I finally figure out how to fold this stuff back up and shove it all back in the envelope. Defeated. Now what am going to do with the rest of the day.
